New CEO Takes Reins at Hospital

October 12, 2011

Until recently, one exceptionally capable chief executive officer (CEO) served two MountainStar hospitals in northern Utah, Brigham City Community Hospital and Ogden Regional Medical Center. At the start of the new year, that CEO, Mark Adams, turned over the reins for the Brigham City hospital to the new CEO, an equally capable Richard Spuhler.

"This is a great honor for me," said Spuhler.  "I am excited to be in this new position and for the challenges and opportunities it will bring.  It is a privilege to be able to serve the Brigham City community."

Recent growth in the variety of comprehensive patient services delivered at Brigham City Community Hospital called for the involvement of a full-time CEO. Since Adams simply could not be in two places at once, a new position was created.

It was a perfect fit for Spuhler, who is no stranger to Brigham City Community Hospital. He began his career there as a controller in 1997, and was promoted to chief financial officer in 1998. As a result of his valuable contributions, he was asked to simultaneously serve as the chief operations officer in 2003.

"Through his exceptional performance over the years, Richard consistently demonstrated his qualifications and ability to step into this important role," said Adams. "I am confident he will continue to lead Brigham City Community Hospital to a bright and successful future."

Adams will continue to work directly with Spuhler as the CEO of acute care services in the northern region of MountainStar Healthcare.

Spuhler was born and raised in Cache Valley and has been involved in the local community for many years. He is currently a member of the Brigham City Rotary Club, and recently served on their board.  The Brigham City Chamber of Commerce has also benefitted from Spuhler's contributions to its board.

In his free time, Spuhler thoroughly enjoys biking. Last year, he rode in the 120 mile Tour De Cure for the Diabetic Association and the 206 mile Lotoja (Logan to Jackson Hole).  His other hobbies include traveling, gardening and photography.
