MountainStar Hospitals Achieve Top-Tier Quality Rankings

Annual HealthGrades study confirms delivery of high-quality patient care

Salt Lake City, UT (Feb. 15, 2012) – MountainStar hospitals throughout Utah received national recognition for achieving superior patient outcomes. In its annual study, HealthGrades®, the nation’s leading independent ratings organization, ranked St. Mark’s Hospital, Lakeview Hospital, Brigham City Community Hospital, and Mountain View Hospital among the best in the United States and in Utah for quality outcomes in multiple areas of patient care.

“Patients today have a wide array of options when it comes to choosing a health care provider,” said Kerry Hicks, HealthGrades chief executive officer. “At HealthGrades, we are proud to have led the way for empowering patient choice based on objective clinical outcomes and access to actionable quality measures. We commend MountainStar hospitals for achieving superior quality as well as supporting consumerism and transparency in Utah.”

According to the Pew Internet Project, increasingly patients are moving from searching disease and treatment-specific information to using the internet to find quality information on doctors and hospitals, 47 percent and 38 percent respectively in 2010, up from 21 percent in 2003. More than 10 million people each month research physician and hospital quality on HealthGrades.com.

The HealthGrades study reports patient outcomes in multiple areas of treatment including cardiac care, stroke care and orthopedic services. The following MountainStar hospitals achieved top rankings in comparison to other hospitals in Utah and across the nation.

The HealthGrades 2011 Healthcare Consumerism and Hospital Quality in America report analyzed objective mortality and complication rates across 27 different medical procedures and diagnoses, at all of the nation’s 5,000 nonfederal hospitals using 40 million hospitalization records obtained from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Data was analyzed over a three year period from 2008 through 2010.

Key findings of the HealthGrades 2011 Healthcare Consumerism and Hospital Quality in America report include:

  • Patients had, on average a 73 percent lower risk of dying in a five-star rated hospital compared to a 1-star rated hospital, and a 54% lower risk of dying in a five-star rated hospital compared to the national average.
If all Medicare patients from 2008 through 2010 had been treated at five-star hospitals, 240,040 lives could have potentially been saved.
  • In an online survey, 42 percent of HealthGrades visitors said that they believe their chances of experiencing an unexpected death or complication is higher in some hospitals in their community compared to others.
